List of Items Prohibited or Restricted from Being Brought into China

According to the relevant regulations of the General Administration of Customs of China and immigration management, special attention should be paid to the following items when entering:


I. Pharmaceuticals

  1. Prohibited
  2. Medicines containing ephedrine-based components (such as some cold medicines and cough medicines).
  3. Anesthetic or psychotropic drugs (such as morphine, codeine, sleeping pills, etc.), unless accompanied by a doctor's prescription and medical certificate.
  4. Unregistered overseas traditional Chinese medicine or medicines containing rare animal and plant ingredients (such as tiger bones, rhinoceros horn products).

  5. Restricted

  6. Prescription drugs must be accompanied by a doctor's prescription (it is recommended to translate it into Chinese) and the original packaging of the medicine.
  7. The total amount of personal self-use medicines shall not exceed a reasonable dosage (usually no more than 1 month's dosage).

II. Food

  1. Prohibited
  2. Fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, seedlings (may carry pests and diseases).
  3. Meat and its products (such as sausages, ham, beef jerky).
  4. Dairy products (such as cheese, butter; except infant formula milk powder).
  5. Bird’s nest (except canned bird's nest).
  6. Endangered animal and plant products (such as shark fins, sea cucumbers, ivory products).

  7. Allowed but need to be declared

  8. Sealed packaged pre-processed food (such as cookies, chocolate).
  9. Infant formula milk powder must be in unopened original packaging, within a reasonable self-use quantity.

III. Cash and Valuables

  1. Cash Limits
  2. When entering, the amount of RMB cash carried shall not exceed 20,000 yuan (about 3,000 USD).
  3. The amount of foreign currency cash carried shall not exceed 5,000 USD equivalent (exceeding requires declaration and presentation of a legitimate source proof).

  4. Valuables

  5. For items such as famous watches, jewelry, cameras, etc., it is recommended to declare them in advance to avoid being mistakenly regarded as smuggling upon departure.

IV. Animals, Plants, and Their Products

  1. Prohibited
  2. Live animals (pets require separate quarantine procedures).
  3. Fur, bones, horn products (such as crocodile skin bags, coral).
  4. Soil or plants containing soil.

  5. Allowed but need quarantine certificates

  6. Some countries/regions' pet food or dried flower products require official quarantine certificates.

V. Hazardous Materials

  • Prohibited: Explosives, flammable liquids (such as gasoline), highly toxic chemicals, firearms and ammunition, controlled knives.
  • Restricted:
  • Power banks: Rated energy ≤100Wh (about 27,000mAh), and must not be checked in as luggage.
  • E-cigarettes: Liquids inside e-cigarette pods must comply with aviation safety regulations.

VI. Culture and Intellectual Property

  • Prohibited: Pirated books, audiovisual products; antiques (need to hold a legal export certificate).

Precautions

  1. Active Declaration: If you are unsure whether an item complies, it is recommended to go through the customs declaration channel.
  2. Consequences of Violation: Undeclared prohibited items may be confiscated, fined, and severe cases may involve criminal responsibility.
  3. Advance Check: Some medicines (such as those containing ephedrine) may be legal in some countries but restricted in China.
  4. Retain Receipts: Purchase invoices for valuables or prescriptions for medicines are recommended to be carried with you.

Customs Declaration Process

  1. Fill out the "Declaration Form for Luggage Items of Inbound and Outbound Passengers of the People's Republic of China".
  2. Choose the "Declaration Channel" when entering and submit the form.
  3. Cooperate with customs officers for inspection.
